@Mike Hagan why not use the condition for the customer/Lead status field for your send email workflow action. So when the status changes emial action would be triggered. This can be also done by scheduled saved search too

I'd probably use a checkbox field and a scheduled workflow. Mark the checkbox after the email is sent
