We do not allow back orders, so expect different behaviour on SCA. We are sure this worked once upon a time, but no more... On our PDP, customers can add more than the Qty available to their basket, and they can try to checkout. When confirming order they get a generic nondescrip error message. Eg: We have Qty 1 available, customer address Qty3 to their basket. I thought SCA checks stock at ADD TO BASKET level, then again when the customer trys to checkout? If the stock has sold between adding to basket and checkout, the is presented with a message saying which item is no longer available... or did I dream this? thanks

This is a setup/configuration setting about allowing back orders
If you have backorders turned off and it still happens means you should doublecheck the settings

Had a conversation with a colleague and we are both somewhat unsure about what's going on. If you're sure that you've got it set up correctly, you may need to raise a ticket. There may not be realtime checking to see if there selected quantity is more than is available. In other words, we can remove out of stock items or hide items that have very low stock, but adding more than is available may not be something we can check on the frontend

We Disallow backorders but display out of stock' for the items. Qty 2 available. But I can add 3 to the basket
The link you gave was for Sitebuilder. I cannot find the Out of Stock setting on the SCA>Config>Shopping tab, but it is on the tab for each product

I don´t think this ever worked that way. What I recall as the behaviour is that if item is in stock (qty=1) shoppers will be able to add it to the cart on whatever qty they want and they will get an error on the place order saying there is not enough stock.
