Will we have access to enhancements and features in future SCA releases or do we need to go through a platform update every release?

New versions are automatically available for you to install.
As you are on SCA (as opposed to SC), updates are not automatic.
How simple updates are are determined by various factors, but IMHO the most important one is the way the customizations are crafted. By following best practices on extension crafting migrations get simpler and simpler.

Second factor being breaking changes on the source code coupled with complex extensions that need to go out of best practices on extensibility.
