I'm trying to get us fully onto NetSuite as we have been using like 3 systems forever because everyone is comfortable using them. So our method should be Sales Order Is quantity available? YES- fufill NO- Create WO If work order is created, release (packaging order) after release, "Formula Work Order" to make the material for the packaging order if we don't have on hand. The Formula work order is the longer process, takes 1-4 days to get ready for Packaging order that can be completed in 1-2 days I guess I'm just here to ask if anyone else is setup with similar timings and processes and how do you do planning on your end?
m
What type of planning? Work order scheduling? Sales order shipment planning? Purchasing? Also is your WO a special work order linked with the SO?
a
I think Sales order planning? What I believe I have figured out is setting minimum quantities for items we sell. Sales Order gets put in and then Packaging WO gets released at that time and in the items list if an item is needed from our mixing dept. a WO link will be there, we are trying to "campaign" so we would hold off on the mixing Dept WO until we had a larger quantity to make at one time
m
If you make your formula work order not special WO then it will all aggregate into the mass create work orders screen. Then you can make a bulk WO for similar formulas that would supply multiple packaging work orders
a
what do you mean by special?
m
When a work order is linked to another WO line or SO line then it is considered a special work order that can only be used to fulfill that specific line If you want to build assemblies more to a stock level or aggregate similar assemblies into a bulk work order then uncheck the special work orders screen box on the assembly record
a
hmmmm
I'll have to think about that
so what is the difference between Build point and Preferred Stock Level?
as far as a saved search shows me I have no assemblies that are checked
m
Build point is the same as reorder point. When the quantity available hits the build point (or goes below) it will trigger this item to create a work order in the mass create work order screen. The quantity suggested to build will be the backordered quantity + preferred stock level
thankyou 1

I really appreciate the wisdom! 🙏

Just in addition to your overall question. This ends up being a very common issue for manufacturing companies 1. If you use the mass create work orders screen to create work orders in bulk based on aggregated demand and reorder points you loose visibility of what Order each assembly or work orders are needed for. But you gain the efficiency of building assemblies in bulk instead of order by order 2. If you use special work orders (each WO is linked to a specific order) then you gain the visibility of what order each WO build pertains to but loose the ability to easily aggregate builds
MRP is meant to help overcome this as it does planning for you based on item stock levels and time fences but it is a lot to setup and manage and can be difficult for teams to fully understand the best way to use it It also adds a few more steps into the purchasing and WO creation process but when setup correctly can help with your planning needs It is also very hard to manage a large number of assemblies and items. Like tens or hundreds of thousands of items is really tough
a
we aren't a huge company. I believe we have 600~ assemblies
id have to check how many items
m
That’s not bad The biggest hurdle is data management. Most companies are not prepared for this but some are Item preferred vendors , pricing, lead times, time fences, reorder points, pricing schedules, stock levels Assembly routings, time fences, revisions All need to be maintained and updated consistently or else MRP gives confusing results. Then people get frustrated with it and give up
a
yes to all this, we are also HAZMAT so we have additional fields that need to go on Pick/Pack slips and BOL
what did not happen from 2021 when they implemented was make fields mandatory on forms after we had made some custom ones and everything is just spotty. We have some Assemblies that don't have Depts, Location set up and its like the most basic info for good record keeping was tossed to the wind lol
