Has anyone migrated from inventory items to matrix items? Currently, in our environment we have every alteration of a product as a unique inventory item and would like them as children of a parent matrix items. What route did you take to do this? Did you create all the new matrix items then inactivate the old inventory items? Did you replace any prior sales data of the old sku with the "new sku? Kind of lost on the best way forward if we go ahead with this project.

My environment has a mix -- Mostly inventory items, but also a good number of built out Matrix listings. I am unaware of a path to migrate from Inventory to Matrix that preserves the inventory item sales data. We've had to create a new Matrix with all newly populated Matrix Children, and then de-activate any duplicitous Inventory Items. This is not to say there isn't a way, but my staff and I (over 9+ years) have not found an easier path to do this to date. Perhaps not interesting to your case, but I'll mention this anyways if you are creating many Matrix Items: We found some cases where we would like to sell a Matrix Child item outside of the Matrix Parent, such as in a separate website product listings. A workaround we occasionally use is to create a Kit Item and add the matrix Child item(s) inside the Kit. This allows us to stock the Child item once, but make it available outside of the Matrix parent item, displayed and marketed however we want. It's not perfect, but allows some added flexibility we occasionally need on Matrix Children skus.

@Dan Curtis That is very helpful! I really wish they made the migration to matrix items easier. Especially since it is required for Suite Commerce to display item variations appropriately.

Yes, the "Item Type" field is essentially not editable. It comes up often, such as doing CSV imports for items.... You need to do an import for each Item Type (Inventory, Assemblies, and Kits). Matrix Items are considered Item Type: Inventory Items, BUT held out on their own, despite that. My team often laments the rigidity and limited configurability of Matrix Items. We often find ourselves wishing there was such thing as a "Matrix Kit", where the user drop down options result in a Kit sku. I'd settle on some more functionalities, period, like "Add an item" options (with a simple yes or no, a la Shopify). If we add such an add-on / up-sell like this, it multiplies the sku count for each question. I had systems in the 2000s and 2010s that had more flexibility than this, which does get quite frustrating.
