What causes a search to lose the ability to inline edit?

It is available to more than one record type

some columns that users were able to inline edit now they are not

other columns continue to have the same inline editing functionality

so if it's only with specific fields/columns then it sounds like something on the form. are these fields editable on the form?

Also the field needs to be shown on the preferred form of the record
