Separate question: We have been using excel up to this point for demand planning and it's gotten to the point now where the compute load is too heavy to run efficiently. Anyone know of a great solution that doesn't cost more than a FTE?

Have you look into the MRP module?

I have heard that the built in NetSuite solution is not so great for this.

We use NetStock. It's a super seamless integration and fairly affordable. We have been happy with it.

Is the issue that you're hitting the row limit of Excel, or is it that your formulas are causing massive lag issues?
