I follow the advice of pricing mentors like Alan Weiss and Jonathan Stark; I won't hijack the thread too much with details, and I highly recommend their books/content. Jonathan's
Learn Your Lines is a great starting point, as is his "Hourly Billing is Nuts".
When my business was centered around landing contracts, I would close 2-4 per year, in the ballpark of 15-25k USD each. My sales conversations consisted of asking questions about the value and urgency of the project, effectively trying to convince the prospect
not to hire me.
Maybe the most important aspect of practicing this methodology was having absolute confidence in walking away from the deal and referring the prospect elsewhere if it wasn't a
perfect fit for me - even when I needed the revenue.
