On of our customers decided yesterday that the ids they send us for data updates can now contain the | character in them, and have broken code almost 30 years old that assumed ids would never contain a space, asterisk, or pipe character.

how do you even fix this lol

Fortunately, I'm not on the engineering team that has to try and fix this, I just saw the incident and I immediately felt second-hand pain.
