I 100% believe this does not matter. When I worked at NetSuite, most of the technical consultants did not come from a software engineering background. Most learn JS at NS doing SS work. I think the general SS developer market primarily consists of people that do not come from a software engineering background.
Most decent engineers would likely hate to work within the confines of an ERP system as their day job. A few people on this channel are a rare breed, you included.
If a large enough company owns their own development capabilities then I would say they should definitely go down your road, but if you're a small company relying on a series of netsuite contractors and consultants then you're exposed to risk if your contractors don't know anything other than pure suitescript.
