? Why wouldn't this simply work?

I’ve only used external id in an import csv context, is it available to SuiteScript to set?

Is line 2 logging?

I believe you can only set externalid in afterSubmit

Is there a COPY type too? I forget

Also externalid is not available for all record types.

@michoel, you could be on to something (although it doesn't make sense to me. One of the reasons I use externalid is to force a 'duplicate' error from NetSuite). I'm going to move this logic to the beforeLoad first ... I'll report back.
