So it seems as @scottvonduhn was saying even though the field holds 1 million characters it is only returning 1000. Even with the formula it is not returning the whole field, just cutting off the end

This actually is dependent upon your criteria on your search. If you have a formula or a join in your filters, then it will truncate (at 1300 characters) when executing on the server.
