@darrenhillconsulting External ID are very good to handle/avoid duplicates in many different records which js specially useful on integrations so I assume a lot of integration would try to use external ID is just something you can't and maybe should not prevent or avoid. Depending on your use case you may be better creating your own custom field...Secondary ID or something...
