How would you handle a scenario where a company has an inventory item A. And the same item with a different name item B. Currently what we are doing is creating inventory item A. And creating a kit item B which has inventory item A as component. This way they can manage the inventory all the same without any hassle. But is there any better alternative to achieve this ?

You have both a kit and inventory with same name ?
r
Different name. For eg. Inventory item is abc Kit item is xyz and the kit item has abc as the component.
Essentially what I am asking is can I create an inventory item with name xyz instead of a kit. And xyz and abc both the item uses the same lot, serial no. etc. since essentially they are the same but for some customer clarity we have kept it as 2 different items.
s
no because them you would have two different inv management , purchase orders etc
r
So this is the best approach for this specific use case ?
s
I assume you are purchasing/receiving storing them as one item?
r
We are. Basically these situations are arriving when we are selling additional parts for a product. For example: Let's say a guitar cover, we have two product brands for guitar. Brand A Guitar and Brand B Guitar both can be shipped with this additional guitar cover. But instead of giving it a generic name like a guitar cover. Initial inventory is created with Brand A Guitar cover. And for Brand B Guitar cover they have created a kit item and added brand A Guitar cover as a component. Guitar cover is just an example, the scenario is similar but not totally the same.

the question is do you want your warehouse, or business to treat it as two different items? do you want know how many do you have of brand a vs brand b ?
r
Warehouse or business doesn't treat it as 2 different items. But customer does. There are overall around 100 items like this. Basically the product the company sells, can have some modification attached to them and these items are mods/additional item/ accessory for those items. I don't like the approach they are using, but no other alternative is coming to mind as of now.
s
then I would say a kit works and is smarter, that is what kits are designed for when you have one invt item with slight mods ,
my only question is if the customer treats it as two different things then you when you are at your desk you would not be able to answer how many you have of version A vs version b, ( example customer calls and says can place an order of 1000 A but you really only have 500 )) so the real answer is that your current setup is not just a system change inside NetSuite but how you order and the warehouse treat it . Your problem is not just a system change

These items are not something which will get bought in a huge quantity. And secondly if they come ask this for item a or b. And if we have 1000 quantity they can get 1000 quantity in any propotion.
