First of all, polls are almost never accurate. It's based on the number of engineers globally, which they're calling "popularity". Not a good indicator of if devs actually like it. C is #2 and that should say something. It's not secure, no one likes it, but it's stable and portable so everyone continues to use it even though no one wants to.

It's all just personal preference. I'm able to quickly and easily translate my thoughts into JavaScript like I haven't been able to in any other language, and that's the crucial bit isn't it?

If others have that same experience with other language(s), that's great too

number of engineers is not a good metric for whether are not people prefer a language tho
e
Sure

The statistics on searches/questions for StackOverflow is a pretty good metric for what languages are being utilized during a given timeframe though.

I think what I'm hearing is that
usage != preference
i.e. a lot of engineers don't necessarily work with the language they love in their day job, especially as new hawtness appears

It looks like they're not even polling, just scraping search data, and setting priority by number of hits: https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/programming-languages-definition/
Basically, they're like, look, we processed a quadrillion search hits. Oh ya? What does it all mean? 🤔

Stack Overflow do an actual annual survey and ask about usage and popularity seperately. https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2019#technology
JavaScript is #1 most used and #11 most loved.
TypeScript is #3 most loved 🧌
