if you are willing to work for it, netsuite has a credential field that can be used with the https module. Its not easy to use, but nobody will be able to see the plain password

Is information available in SuiteAnswers about it?
If that’s too challenging, are people just storing it as a custom module?

there isn't much documentation beyond what can be found at the script example in the N/https Module documentation

some basic information about it is that you store the password in NetSuite using the credential field. It returns a guid id that you can use. The https module will replace instances of the guid with the password in requests it sends.

That’s helpful. Do you just store it once? And then it stores it in an encrypted manner or do you create a custom record type or something or something of that sort?

I was reading the guide and picked it up, but I’m trying to translate to how I’d see it in action.

you create the credential field using the serverWidget, so you can make a suitelet form or just add the field to any record using a beforeLoad User Event Script

i personally used a custom record since i didn't want to deal with the suitelet

once you set the credential field with the password, it is automatically replaced by the guid and stored in NetSuite
