avoiding the buildup of intermediate results is likely to gain more than hand-optimizing loop execution. The other argument for coding in the

_.map(...)

style is it's far easier to reason about if another developer looks at it. That's worth more than a few microseconds. All said though, I'd wager lodash is faster than native NS (rhino) implementations, though I haven't benchmarked it.
