We're looking to capture historical purchases from vendors in a custom transaction that doesn't post. I was assuming the Purchase Transaction type could be used to represent a historical type of PO, but it displays amounts quite differently than what we typically see of POs. Am I right to be using this type or would you suggest another type to capture PO information?

the PO don't post on the GL, what is the purpose of creating a record that has the same behavior as the PO ?

I agree you can just create POs dated in the past and then close them so they don’t show up as on order inventory
