Since screens have become wider, more app designs are making use of side panels, side menus, etc. on both the left and right, since it’s better layout for modern screens compared to top menus, and buttons at the top or bottom of a window from the old 4:3 ratio days. I like having as much vertical space as possible, so it’s a positive change overall. I’d like to see browsers change from tabs at the top to a scrolling panel on the left side with all open pages, that could toggle between pages, like different channels in a chat app. I also think NetSuite could benefit from that. It’s not uncommon to have so many menus at the top that they don’t all fit, and you have to use a drop down to access the last few anyway, so why not put them in a side panel?

Microsoft Edge has the option for Vertical Tabs instead of Horizontal. Regarding the top menu, since you are saying the screens are becoming wider then wouldn't it make more sense to have it on the top menu? If they were on a sidepanel then wouldn't that be same issue and then you would have to scroll down/or hit a dropdown to view more?

i meant better for use of space. with more horizontal space, it makes more sense to divide things horizontally. I did not know Edge had that feature! I am on a Mac, so don’t have that option, but I am going to start checking my browsers to see if they have added that.
I don’t mind scrolling vertically in a panel. I hate scrolling left/right, though.
or worse, having to go all the way to the right and accessing a drop-down menu

yeah i agree with that, when i see a webpage that spans horizontally i consider it some kind of defect. I do like the dual sidebar idea like how it is on the netsuite dashboard layout option with the three columns. Edge does also have a sidebar option where you can have separate apps show on the right sidebar, so seems like its on someones radar.

yeah, definitely a trend in that direction and a welcome one for me
