Dang. I was hoping for a undocumented 'apply formatting' boolean I could set to false

Ha well that could still certainly be possible, but I'm not aware of it

I guess I'll have to resort to introducing a client script and validating keystrokes into a TEXT type field. sigh Thanks for chiming in @erictgrubaugh

UI Suitelets are lame. I generally don't do them any more.
