map/reduce basically replace all of the existing scheduled scripts you have in 1.0 (most likely). They have a "get input phase" which just gathers the data like "give me all customers that meet this criteria" and then there's a map phase that groups the customers somewhow.. like "group all customers by status" and then for each grouping that you just made in the map phase, reduce runs and you can act on that grouping.
