So basically I have a custom record that connects to a calendar event record. When the custom record gets updated at anytime I need to update the field on the calendar event record to reflect the proper number of associated records

`afterSubmit` looks like what you're looking for

If the field is a counter and is only really needed for viewing why not have it set dynamically? 

On a before load run a count search and set the field
