ok nevermind the solution I used for shipmethod isn't going to work here. There are only about a dozen shipping methods. There are thousands of customer records. the Customer field in the Sales Order form only lists a few hundred customers at a time though, so I'm going to have to preserve that functionality instead of a single select box with thousands of options. 😞
