i honestly don't know if you can display suitelet content within a subtab

what did you use to display the table? inline html field?

Right; Build your Suitelet to return HTML. Add Inline HTML field to subtab that isn't Store Value, Create UE that calls Suitelet and sets HTML field with output of Suitelet

You could also set the default value of the Inline HTML field to be an iframe that displays the Suitelet so that you can cut out the UE script

Yes UE to create the subtab and HTML Inline Field. I think I used <div> or <iframe> pointing to the suitelet
