If we have a custom record and we want to be able to use the Communications area for emails to/from all sorts of Contacts that aren’t necessarily associated with a particular custom field on the record, how do we achieve that?

Hi Jen. On the custom record in edit mode, you can click the “Enable Mail Merge” checkbox. After saving, it shows up as a tab and you can email from it, and see communications. You can rename the mail merge tab to “Communications” if you want.

Yeah, we’ve done that, but it will only show like… two Contacts (two people who happen to be the values in the two contact fields we have on this record type)
we need to be able use other Contacts in the Communications area.
I achieved the above previously with a custom record type by adding a multiselect Contact field called “collaborators” and then behind the scenes, had 10 hidden ‘collaborator’ fields that the values from the multi-select went into, but this is not a good solution obviously, as it limits you to 10 preset Contacts.
it seems you can only email a Contact from a Custom Record if that Contact is the value in a List/Record -> Contact field on the Custom Record.

You can email anyone. It may not be on the list but you can bypass it by just typing an email in the email field….You don’t need the recipient field.

that’s …. not ideal.
I also can’t attach something “from” a Contact without specifying the Contact.
