Has anyone ever come across a situation where they added some roles to themselves and when they logged back in again Admin was revoked? I had a corrosponding message about this being based on my usage...or something. Weird.

What did the message say & what was the source address?

It was a boiler plate message along the lines of based on my usage etc etc and I was given just the other roles I had just added to my account to login. On my employee card Admin was removed (by myself)

sounds like you have a workflow or script running in your instance to control ADMIN roles.
