Nothing 'new' I'm aware of - just the legal aspects can be complicated. My understanding is a company has to deal with all the tax and labor laws of every country/locale in which they have employees. I wonder how these funky 'virtual' companies that are both 100% remote and global handle it.

Generally turns into a contractor role if outside their jurisdiction. Tax implications fall on the contractor.
