does anybody know how I can have a sales discount applied to the item itself as opposed to being added as a line item on the order? this makes determining our gross margin very challenging because we have hundreds of thousands of dollars in a bucket (sales discounts) that aren't being directly attributed to a particular class and product. I see a similar question posed here, but not sure how I would apply a discount to the header level. - https://www.reddit.com/r/Netsuite/comments/cx3ckn/discount_on_an_invoice_applies_to_item_directly/

If you want to use Discount for the whole transaction use the discount field at the header.

@Suitestallion can you provide a little detail? is that something we have to do differently when creating a sales discount or do i need to create a custom transaction field for the header?
s
that field should be there already on the standard form, you might have hide it on your custom form. You don't need to create a different item, you need to apply at the header level as compared to line level and that discount should apply to your entire transaction

There is Rate field as well, so if you want to do it on fly and just type in (Negative) rate and that should work without creating the discount Item, not 100 % sure on this one though.

it appears that we can do that with a manual order but our primary business is ecommerce sales so we would need the discount line to be applied to the header automatically. do you know how we would do that?
s
Hmm I think you can create a promo code which you can use for entire transaction
n
how you're adding line item for ecommerce sales orders not by using promocodes

it can't work on the header level because there may be items that are not qualifying. We need the sales discount to change the amount of the item it is being applied to on the line as opposed to adding a sales discount line.
