When using the Navigation Shortcut Portlet, is there any way to let non-administrator users add their own shortcuts to it? From what I have seen, it looks like only admins can add shortcuts into Shortcut Groups. But this seems like a very inconvenient way of using shortcuts if non-Admin users can't add shortcuts on their own.

Doesn't adding shortcuts (via the star icon in the menu bar) automatically add them to the navigation shortcut portlet? Pretty sure that's how it used to work, that it was basically just that star menu in portlet/list format.

@James Morris I'm not talking about the standard shortcuts portlet, as I think you are correct in regards to the standard one. In this case I'm talking about the Navigation Shortcut Portlet, whose shortcuts can be customized by admins at Setup > Navigation Portlet > Manage Shortcut Group.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. I haven't really messed with the navigation portlet before, TBH (I just use the menu bar). If I had to take a wild guess I would think it would just mirror the menu bar, so if you make center/tab changes they should be reflected in the navigation portlet as well. If that doesn't work, or you want them to be different, maybe someone more knowledgeable can jump in with some insight, but I would think at that point you're going to have to do something like building your own portlet that's a facsimile of the real one to get what you want.
Also, if they can add their own shortcuts to the shorcuts portlet why do they need it in the navigation portlet? I mean I understand everyone wants everything exactly the way the way want it and not any different, but sometimes the easy solution is the best, even if it involves a little compromise.

@James Morris The navigation shortcut portlet is a fantastic way to provide the same links to users of the same role. It makes for supporting users better and is great for introducing new reports and searches. It would be nice if there was a way for users to add their own links, like the normal shortcuts portlet works. Maybe a future feature

No totally I get that it would be great, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for a particular feature or enhancement to get done (or telling my users that they're ever going to get it). I have numerous enhancements and even defects going back to 2011...
j
Ugghhh! Their todo list is longer and older than mine... Actually using both is not a bad solution. the Nav portlet for links to everything you need to do your job and the personal links for other stuff you do. You can encourage the users to report what the have in their personal link that might be beneficial to others in that role.

@James Morris The users in my company do use the standard shortcuts portlet, but some of them have added a lot of shortcuts, and their shortcuts portlet has so many shortcuts that it's no longer convenient to reference it, because there are so many things in it. Thus I wanted to set up the Navigation Portlet to give them another options for adding shortcuts. a
