What's the real difference between locking a period and closing a period?

There is no thing as locking period you can only lock subtasks on period end checklist Lock AP Task lock AR Task Lock All transactions once they are locked you can close a period. Locking tasks still allow you to post transactions provided they have override period restrictions however if period is locked no transaction can be created even with the override period restriction.
